Rising from the dusty rinsed streets of ‘Scarfieville’, Dunedin’s Summer Thieves are a melting pot of reggae, hip-hop, rock, and funk.
“We’re just laid back guys who put on parties, we don’t take ourselves too seriously", vocalist Jake Barton says.
“We want everyone to have a good time.”
It’s a laid back approach that’s proven dangerously effective too, with the band comprised of Johnny Ward (Drums and Vocals), Adam Spencer (Bass), Angus Cleland (Keys, Samples and Percussion) and Jake Barton (Guitar and Vocals) amassing a legion of breathers nationwide.
In 2014, the boys first entered the studio with Kiwi legend and multi-platinum award winning artist and producer Tiki Taane, to start work on their debut album.
“He’s someone we’ve all really looked up to, so it was awesome to get in the studio with him,” Barton says.
“We clicked musically, and on the same vibe personality wise. We didn’t feel any pressure whatsoever being in the studio, so it was super cool.”
Their debut album 'Warped' was released just recently in July this year.
“Warped is like the $1 mixture from your childhood. A few of your classic candies – y’know what you’d expect in our mix, alongside a few buzzy treats” Angus Cleland says. “There’s our roots in reggae and dub, with traces of rap, rock and other world influences.”
“Overall, it still has that summer vibe, but there are some dark parts, and a bit of heavy shit. We’re still on the summer tunes, but now we’ve got the bangers too.” Barton says
The release topped off an already huge year for the boys who were selected to join spiritual braddas Sticky Fingers once again on their now third sold-out NZ tour; adding to the list of international and local acts they’ve worked with which includes Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Six60, Ocean Alley, Katchafire, Sons of Zion and many more.
This is just the beginning, there is plenty more to come...
